Dino-Pizza Crunch (Scotland)

Pizza Crunch can be found in “chippie” shops across Scotland. It is served where fish and chips are served, and it is usually served with a side of fries or ‘chippies.’

This pizza does not require a pizza steel or stone. There is no baking involved. It is fried in oil on the stove top, or if you have a fryer you usually use. It’s a fun way to have pizza with a twist - a fried twist : )

Prep: 10 min.      Cook: 6 - 10 min.       Total: 16 - 20 min

Serves: 1 personal pizza

Ingredients:

1 small personal size (100g) frozen cheese and tomato sauce pizza

2 cups All Purpose flour

1 cup cornstarch

1 tsp salt

1 pinch bicarbonate soda (baking soda)

1 tablespoon baking powder

½ tsp smoked paprika

1 tsp black pepper

3 cups plain sparkling water or club soda (see note below)

Oil for frying - vegetable or olive oil, a light flavor oil; enough to cover half way to almost the top of your frozen pizza if using a stove top deeper style pan; or fill according to your directions for a deep fryer

Malt vinegar for dipping (optional)

Side note: Some families like to use 150 ml cold 0% alcohol, such as Peroni Italy for the flavor. If you use this, decrease the sparkling water by ½ a cup. So it will be 2 ½ cups sparkling water, and ½ cup 0 % Peroni type beverage.

Directions:

  • In a large bowl, add the dry ingredients: flour, cornstarch, salt, bicarbonate soda, baking powder, paprika and pepper.  Mix with a whisk until combined.

  • Add the sparkling water and mix until combined to form a smooth batter.

  • Take the cheese pizza, cheese side down and place in the batter to cover. Then flip to the other side to cover with batter. Allow excess batter to drip back into the bowl.

  • Carefully drop batter pizza into hot oil to cook for 3-5 minutes, and carefully flip to the other side for another 3-5 minutes, until golden brown on both sides. The time will depend on your pizza size and what method of frying you are using. Monitor accordingly. Caution: HOT

  • Remove pizza from oil carefully with long tongs. Drain excess oil and place on a plate with paper towels for excess oil.

  • Serve warm with a little sprinkle of salt, and a dip of malt vinegar (both optional)

  • Enjoy your Dino-rific pizza!
